Bus riders get ready for RTS changes

Posted Thursday, April 17th 2014 @ 6pm  by Bud Lowell

RTS bus riders will no longer be able to ride through downtown without changing buses under schedule changes coming this fall.

The Rochester Genesee Regional Transportation Authority has held the first of several information meetings about route and service changes planned when the new new Downtown Transit Center opens in November. A major one is elimination of what the authority calls "through routing."

Right now you can pay your dollar, get on the bus and ride through downtown to a stop on the other side. For example, someone who lives in Charlotte and works on Park Avenue can ride a Route 1 bus from their home stop all the way to their work stop for one fare. But routes will begin and end at the Transit Center once it opens. Everyone will have to get off and change buses to continue, meaning another dollar fare or a multi-ride pass.

Other major changes: evening bus schedules will begin at 8 p.m. instead of 6 p.m. Evening buses will leave at 15 minute intervals, for instance at 8 p.m. instead of 8:12. The authority says this will give time to transfer between buses and also be easier to remember.

The next meeting will be Monday night at 9:00 at the Neighborhood Service Center Northeast at 500 Norton Street. A public hearing will be held May 8th.
