Prosecution rests in Whittemore trial

Posted May 22nd, 2014 @ 7:09pm by Bud Lowell

The prosecution has rested in the murder trial of Clayton Whittemore, the man accused of beating SUNY Brockport freshman Alexandra Kogut to death.

District Attorney Sandra Doorley wrapped her case with a surprise witness: a former cellmate who says Whittemore shared details of the crime while they were housed together at the Monroe County Jail.

David Camelio testified that Whittemore first knocked Kogut out, then decided to beat her with an iron after sitting on the bed and thinking things over. Doorley says that shows he didn't just "snap" as the defense maintains.

The defense did not comment outside of court, but IN court questioned why Camelio came forward only this month. The defense begins its case next week.
