Senator Charles Schumer wants the EPA to fund a new barrier beach off Braddock Bay in Greece.
The Senator stood with local officials Wednesday saying it will restore the natural water flow that used to keep the bay scoured out. Since that beach disappeared in the 1970s the bay has silted in and can no longer be used by boaters or much of the native wildlife.
Schumer backs a $9 million federal project to rebuild the natural beach and restore the habitat. He says this is a rare chance to help homeowners, boaters, wildlife and the environment at the same time.
The senator is pushing the Environmental Protection Agency to fund the project from a pot of federal money he helped supply.
