Deaf community wants full-time captions on area movie screens

Rochester's deaf community is launching a push to get all area movie screens captioned for the deaf and hard-of-hearing.

About 50 deaf and hard-of-hearing will attend the Regal Theater 18 in Henrietta today asking for on screen captions whenever even one deaf person is in the audience.

Spokesman Dean DeRusso says currently they need to get a group of 10 or more people together, contact the theater ahead of time and ask for on-screen captions. State law mandates a choice of either on-screen or off-screen through closed captioning glasses or other devices. But DeRusso says those gadgets don't work very well and he says on-screen captioning is hardly ever available.

He says studies show full-time captioning doesn't bother hearing viewers and makes it a lot easier for the deaf.
