The Landmark Society of Western New York has jumped into a dispute over the fate of an 1870 church building on West Main Street in Rochester.
The society has put 660 West Main on its "Five to Revive" list of historically significant buildings that should be preserved.
The former Westminster Presbyterian Church is vacant, but structurally sound. Developer Marvin Maye has bought the property and has plans to develop a Dollar General store on the site. Neighbors who don't want another discount store in the West Main area launched a petition drive on Change.org and are trying to deny Maye a zoning change for the project.
The Landmark Society announced its designation early at this morning's Rochester Zoning Board of Appeals meeting.
