'Wipeout' Contestant Dies After Completing Show's Obstacle Course

A contestant lost his life while competing on the television show Wipeout.

Earlier this week, a male competitor died after finishing one of the show's obstacle courses, various multiple outlets have reported. According to New York Post, the contestant required needed help and had to be tended to by on-site medical emergency personnel while completing the course on Wednesday (November 18).

Although he was not on the course itself, The Post indicates the man was still on the set in Santa Clarita, California, when he complained of chest pains, prompting medics to administer a defibrillator. The man was transported to the hospital where he later passed away.

The show’s network, TBS, requires contestants to undergo medical exams before shooting and also has on-site paramedics, doctors, and a safety producer. Due to the tragic incident, the network has since delayed production for Wipeout, which has yet to air. As yet, the show is scheduled to resume sometime after the Thanksgiving holiday.

“We are devastated to have learned of his passing, and our deepest sympathy goes out to the family,” a TBS spokesperson told The Post in a statement.

Of the tragedy, the show’s distributor, Endemol Shine North America, added: “We offer our heartfelt condolences to the family, and our thoughts are with them at this time.”

Wipeout, which had its original run from 2008 to 2014, is planned to premiere in 2021. Per the description, the reboot will feature “twists and new elements that will push contestants’ athleticism and determination to even greater extremes.”
